学英语会话的朋友,大都知道初次被人引荐时,要向对方问候"How do you do?"这句问候语虽然是疑问句(interrogative)的形式,但事实上如同叙述句(statement),句尾语调要下降,对方的回答也总是重复一遍"How do you do?"时间许可的话可以再加一句 "I'm glad to meet you." 替初次见面的人互相介绍时,一般的顺序是这样的:

1. 把男士介绍给女士,因为这表示女士为尊。例如:"Mrs. Green, may

I introduce Mr. Brown?" 或:"Mrs. Green, this is Mr. Brown." 或:"Mrs. Green, Mr. Brown."也可以.

2. 把陪客(或位卑年幼者)介绍给主客(或位尊年高者),即先说主客的名字,再说陪客的名字。

3. 平辈间的聚会,彼此间直呼其名的(on a first-name basis) ,可作如下的介绍:"Helen (Green), this is Peter(Brown)."

被介绍的.男士,彼此之间通常握手为礼。女士彼此之间通常不握手。女士和男士之间,必须由女士先伸出手,男士才可轻握一下为礼。有些女士不习惯握手,她们不伸手时,也不表示失礼,男士切莫着急。 Host: Mrs. Green, I'd like to introduce my boss, Mr. Brown. Mrs. Green: How do you do?

Mr. Brown: How do you do?I'm very glad to meet you. Mrs. Green: Nice to meet you, too.

结语:

男士在座而有女客进入时,男士应起立,一直等到那位女士入座或离去时,男士才可恢复入座。如果后进来的男士被主人带到原先在座的男士们面前一一介绍时,在座的男士也应起立握手为礼。

「约」而后「会」

西方人的惯例,不管是公事或私事,在拜访之前一定要事先约好(make an appointment),只有至亲好友(真正好朋友),才有资格做「不速之客」(drop in without notice )。在公事上,主管之间的约会常由秘书(secretaries)排定。 Secretary: Good morning. I'm Mr. Brown's secretary. What can I do for you?

Visitor: I am Peter Smith of the ABC Company. I have an appointment with Mr. Brown.

Secretary: Mr. Brown is on the phone right now. Would you please wait a few moments? Visitor: Certainly? Secretary: Please have a seat. Visitor: Thank you. ****

Secretary: (to Mr. Brown) Mr. Smith is here for his nine o'clock appointment. May I bring him in? Mr. Brown: Yes, please do.

Secretary: (to Mr. Smith) Please come with me, Mr. Smith.
