1、多言何益

What's the Good of Talking Much

One day, Zi Qin asked his master Mo Zi:

一天,子禽问他的老师墨子:

"Master, is there any good at all of talking much?"

“老师,多说话到底有没有好处?”

Mo Zi thought for a while, and answered:

墨子想了一下回答说:

"If one talks too much, what good is there?"

“话要是说得太多了,还有什么好处呢?”

Then, he told Zi Qin:

接着,又告诉子禽说:

"Toads and frogs croak and flies buzz day and night until they are parched and dry in the mouth, yet nobody listens to them.”

“蛤蟆、青蛙、苍蝇白天黑夜不停地叫,叫得口干舌燥,可是却没有人听它们的。”

“But a rooster in a chicken coop crows only a few times at dawn, and everyone knows that when it crows, daylight is coming and the whole world will be awakened.”

“但是,鸡棚里的雄鸡只在黎明时啼叫两三次,大家知道鸡啼就要天亮,天下皆醒。”

“Therefore, there is no use talking too much. What is important is to suit the words to the occasion, and say things which hit the nail on the head."

“所以,多说话没有什么用处,重要的是话要说得切合时机,说到点子上。”

2、隔墙有耳

Once upon a time, there was a curious man。

从前,有一个好奇心很重的人。

He liked to gossip about other peoples' privacy。

他总是喜欢四处打听别人的.秘密。

He knew too many secrets and found it hard to keep them all。

他知道的秘密太多了,憋在心里很难受。

One day he drank several cups of wine, and while drunk spilled all the secrets。

一天,他喝了几杯酒,结果把自己打听到的事情全部说了出来。

To his surprise, the man next door heard all he said。

他没想到,隔壁房间里的人听见了他说的话。

Very soon, everyone knew of his bad habit of gossiping。

没过多久,所有人都知道了他多嘴的坏毛病。

The walls may not have ears, but the person next door does. "This idiom is often used to alert people to be careful about their words。

墙壁虽然没有耳朵,但是隔在墙另一头的人有,这个成语现在常常用来告诫人们要谨言慎行,不要说三道四。
